This week, Ford stated that it will be recalling nearly 500,000 minivans and SUV’s due to a pair of mechanical issues. 205,896 Freestar and Mercury Montery minivans made during the 2004 and 2005 model years will be recalled because their torque converter output shaft may fail and cause a loss of power. Also included in the recall is 244,530 Escape SUVs made during the 2001 and 2002 model years, because of a leaky brake fluid cap. If the fluid leaks, it could corrode electrical connectors and lead to a fire. Owners will be informed and the parts will be replaced for free.

A Dallas jury awarded a woman (Ashley Reedy) who was injured in a roll-over crash on a Greyhound bus 7.2 million dollars. The driver for the Greyhound bus was allegedly using a cell phone while driving in icy conditions on an interstate. The driver braked improperly as he approached a wreck on the highway and lost control of his bus. The bus rolled over which injured Reedy’s head, neck, and back. Records showed that the bus driver had been using his cell phone 17 times in the three hours prior to the accident. Reedy was awarded 2.2 million in damages and 4.8 million in punitive damages after it was found that Greyhound and its drivers were grossly negligent in the accident. If you or someone you know has been severely injured in an auto or bus accident, you may be compensated for your injuries. Our car wreck attorneys can assist...

Car Accident. You hear those words and a lot of images come to mind. But what about when you hear the words “bus accident?” Was it a school bus or chartered bus? How did this happen? Are the children and others okay? Was there something wrong with this bus? Why are there no seat belts on some buses, especially school buses? Since 2000, there have been over 1,200 motor vehicle traffic accidents involving school transportation vehicles according to the U.S. Department of Transportation National Traffic Safety Administration, Traffic Safety Facts, 2009 Data. Bus accident, especially those involving young school children, are horrible to hear about. When word of the recent school bus wreck just outside Temple, Texas involving the Academy ISD school district children, some people were reminded of the 2003 chartered bus incident. In that accident, members of a local Temple church were traveling on IH-35 in Waco when...

A tractor-trailer struck a school bus full of children in Temple, Texas, flipping the bus onto its side and sending 32 people – 29 of them children – to the hospital. The bus accident happened on Farm-to-Market Road 93 on the outskirts of Temple, about 60 miles northeast of Austin. A hardware truck allegedly ran a stop sign and struck the Academy school district bus. One 9-year-old boy was ejected through the escape hatch of the roof, and the bus driver was knocked unconscious. The bus driver was in critical condition for several days after the accident, but his condition has been upgraded from critical to serious. The two other adults in the crash, including the truck driver, were treated and discharged. An eighth grade student was hospitalized for a broken back. Academy school Superintendent Kevin Sprinkles said the injured students were expected to recover, although “they all face a long road”...

On January 17th, a school bus from Academy, TX, which was carrying 38 children from all grade levels, was clipped by a hardware truck. The school bus flipped onto its side after the hardware truck ran a stop sign. The accident occurred in the early morning at the intersection of FM 93 and FM 95, which is near the outskirts of Temple, Texas. 32 people (29 of them were children) were sent to the hospital. A 9 year old was ejected during the wreck and the school bus driver was knocked unconscious. Three of the children were admitted to the hospital and one was listed in critical condition. Academy school Superintendent, Kevin Sprinkles, stated that all the children were expected to recover, but that “they all face a long road” to recovery.
126,000 touring motorcycles made my Honda Motor Co. will be recalled due to a brake problem that could result in fire. The models are 2001-2010 GL1800 Goldwings. The bike’s rear brake may still be partially engaged even after the rider releases it, according to Honda. The company stated: “Continued riding with the rear brake engaged/dragging may generate enough heat to cause the rear brake to catch fire.” The braking system’s secondary master cylinder is to blame. According to Honda safety officials, they were first alerted to the problem in July 2010 when a customer finished a ride and parked his bike. A few minutes later, he “heard a small explosion, saw fire emanating from the rear brake area, and used a fire extinguisher to put out the flames.”

According to the Associated Press, Honda Motor Company is recalling 304,000 vehicles around the globe for air bags that may inflate with too much pressure in a crash. This has been shown to cause metal and plastic pieces to fly and cause injuries and deaths in the case of a car wreck. The models affected are 2001-2002 models of Accord, Civic, Odyssey, Pilot, and CR-V. This recall is an expansion of recalls for the same problem that occurred in 2008 and again carried out in 2009 and 2010. Now, the recall covers about two million vehicles worldwide. Hajime Keneko, Honda spokesman, said: “The cause of the latest recall was the use of incorrect material in the chemical used to deploy air bags. The initial cause of the recall was excessive moisture in the inflator propellant, which is part of what inflates the air bag.”

In these days, it seems that automobile manufacturers play a huge role in distracted drivers. The distracted driver has become just as much of a problem as the drunk driver. Distracted driving seems to be a new battlefield. Among the common problems such as drivers texting while driving are now automobile manufacturers including too much technology in their automobile builds. One such an example is Ford’s MyFord Touch system. This system is available to the driver in the cockpit. This summer, Ford added an 8 inch LCD touch screen in the center of the dash that coordinates entertainment functions such as the radio, satellite radio and mp3 playback. The center also manages phone calls, the navigation system, climate control, and settings for the traction and cruise controls. Consumer Reports, who has no ties to lobbyists or manufacturers and is privately funded, no longer recommends the Ford Edge Sport. Consumer Reports...

In a bold move that is already drawing criticism, the National Transportation Safety Board has announced a recommendation for a nationwide ban on all cell phone use while driving. It is a recommendation only, not a requirement, but it is certain to have far-reaching effects on the national discussion over driving and cell phone use. The NTSB Chairwoman, Deborah Hersman, defended the all-encompassing ban, saying it is the duty of her organization to ensure public safety. “I think our charge is not to worry about what’s popular,” said Hersman. “We don’t take surveys to try to figure out what we should say. In fact, many of the recommendations that we make are not popular with folks, whether it’s policymakers or the average citizen, because we’re asking people to change behavior. We’re asking people to do things that might be hard.” According to the NTSB, 3,092 roadway fatalities last year were...
