| Toyota says it will recall 3.8 million vehicles in the United States to address problems with a removable floor mat that could interfere with the vehicle`s accelerator and cause a crash.
The company says it will be the largest U.S. recall in its history. Owners could learn about the safety campaign as early as next week. Toyota and the government warned owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles about safety problems tied to the removable floor mats. They say the mats could interfere with the vehicle`s accelerator and cause a crash. The recall will affect 2007-2010 model year Toyota Camry, 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon, 2004-2009 Toyota Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra, 2007-2010 Lexus ES350 and 2006-2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350. Owners should take out the floor mats on the driver`s side and not replace them. Toyota`s previously largest U.S. recall was about 900,000 vehicles in 2005 to fix a steering issue. |

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009Three killed when Humvee goes airborn on Texas highway
Monday, September 28th, 2009Three people were killed last week on a stretch on Interstate 35 near Troy Texas.
According to a story published in the Temple Daily Telegram, a Humvee went airborne, crossed over a concrete barrier dividing north and southbound lanes of Interstate 35 in Troy, sheared the top off a small car, then collided with the cab of an 18-wheeler. Drivers of all three vehicles died at the scene.
Initial reports from the Troy Police Department indicate the Humvee was traveling south when it struck a black Toyota Corolla, driven by Douglas Ashcroft, 41, of Austin, who was killed. The Humvee was still in mid-air when it struck the cab of the 18-wheeler, killing the truck’s driver, Donald Johnson, 44, of Burleson.
The 18-wheeler, in turn, collided with a truck that had been towing an SUV on a flatbed trailer but was parked on the side of the road and unoccupied. A dump truck also struck the trailer of the 18-wheeler but the driver was not injured.
The woman driving the Humvee, Altha Gibson, 21, of Desoto, who is believed to be a National Guardsman, was also killed. Two other people were treated at the scene.
The cause of the wreck is under investigation by the Troy Police Department, with assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety. It was raining at the time of the accident.
Woman Suing TxDOT and Others Stemming from Car Crash
Wednesday, August 12th, 2009A man and boy died in a vehicle accident in July. Gervious Hinkle, 63 of Fort Worth, and his grandson, 13 year old Casey, were both killed when they were stuck in a traffic jam and an 18-wheeler drove into the back of the sport utility vehicle they were in.
Melissa Hinkle, the boy’s mother, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the Texas Department of Transportation, the truck driver Randy Crume, the owner of the truck Refrigerated Delivery Services Inc., and KKM Construction Inc. who has a contract with TxDot. She claims that the defendants negligently contributed to the death of her father and son. She was also badly injured in the wreck and has received extensive medical treatments.
The Interstate 35 was undergoing repairs when the accident occurred. The lawsuit states that repair work “created a traffic jam that backed up for miles” prior to the crash. The wreck happened when the truck drove upon the traffic jam and slammed into the SUV according to investigators.
Another wreck has taken place since then when another tractor-trailer drove into the back of a car, which was also stuck in a jam. Anthony and Kimberly Brandon both died in the crash.
