Three killed when Humvee goes airborn on Texas highway

Three people were killed last week on a stretch on Interstate 35 near Troy Texas.

According to a story published in the Temple Daily Telegram, a Humvee went airborne, crossed over a concrete barrier dividing north and southbound lanes of Interstate 35 in Troy, sheared the top off a small car, then collided with the cab of an 18-wheeler. Drivers of all three vehicles died at the scene.

Initial reports from the Troy Police Department indicate the Humvee was traveling south when it struck a black Toyota Corolla, driven by Douglas Ashcroft, 41, of Austin, who was killed. The Humvee was still in mid-air when it struck the cab of the 18-wheeler, killing the truck’s driver, Donald Johnson, 44, of Burleson.

The 18-wheeler, in turn, collided with a truck that had been towing an SUV on a flatbed trailer but was parked on the side of the road and unoccupied. A dump truck also struck the trailer of the 18-wheeler but the driver was not injured.

The woman driving the Humvee, Altha Gibson, 21, of Desoto, who is believed to be a National Guardsman, was also killed. Two other people were treated at the scene.

The cause of the wreck is under investigation by the Troy Police Department, with assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety. It was raining at the time of the accident.
