Defective Toyotas?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
Toyota says it will recall 3.8 million vehicles in the United States to address problems with a removable floor mat that could interfere with the vehicle`s accelerator and cause a crash.

The company says it will be the largest U.S. recall in its history. Owners could learn about the safety campaign as early as next week.

Toyota and the government warned owners of Toyota and Lexus vehicles about safety problems tied to the removable floor mats. They say the mats could interfere with the vehicle`s accelerator and cause a crash.

The recall will affect 2007-2010 model year Toyota Camry, 2005-2010 Toyota Avalon, 2004-2009 Toyota Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Toyota Tundra, 2007-2010 Lexus ES350 and 2006-2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350.

Owners should take out the floor mats on the driver`s side and not replace them.

Toyota`s previously largest U.S. recall was about 900,000 vehicles in 2005 to fix a steering issue.

Three killed when Humvee goes airborn on Texas highway

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Three people were killed last week on a stretch on Interstate 35 near Troy Texas.

According to a story published in the Temple Daily Telegram, a Humvee went airborne, crossed over a concrete barrier dividing north and southbound lanes of Interstate 35 in Troy, sheared the top off a small car, then collided with the cab of an 18-wheeler. Drivers of all three vehicles died at the scene.

Initial reports from the Troy Police Department indicate the Humvee was traveling south when it struck a black Toyota Corolla, driven by Douglas Ashcroft, 41, of Austin, who was killed. The Humvee was still in mid-air when it struck the cab of the 18-wheeler, killing the truck’s driver, Donald Johnson, 44, of Burleson.

The 18-wheeler, in turn, collided with a truck that had been towing an SUV on a flatbed trailer but was parked on the side of the road and unoccupied. A dump truck also struck the trailer of the 18-wheeler but the driver was not injured.

The woman driving the Humvee, Altha Gibson, 21, of Desoto, who is believed to be a National Guardsman, was also killed. Two other people were treated at the scene.

The cause of the wreck is under investigation by the Troy Police Department, with assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety. It was raining at the time of the accident.

A Bryan, Texas woman was killed last week when she lost control of her vehicle and ended up in the path of an on-coming 18-wheeler.

According to a story published on the Navasota Examiner’s website Nickie Lynn Pittman of Bryan, 38, was on her way to teach an English class at Montgomery College early Friday morning. Her car was cut in half by the impact and she was delcared dead at the scene.

Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper James Gonzales of Hempstead told Examiner reporters that Pittman was traveling eastbound on S.H. 105, when the 1997 Ford Escort she was driving veered slightly off the roadway and lost control of the vehicle for an unknown reason.

The Escort went into a sideways skid and ended up in the westbound lane, where it was struck on the right side by the oncoming W W Webber truck driven by Alfredo Carraman of Houston, 58. The car was cut in half as its back half was dragged underneath the one-ton that landed in a ditch on the north side of the roadway.
