Big-rig driver in fatal wreck had safety violations

A Georgia-based trucking company that contracted a driver arrested in a double-fatal crash has logged a high number of violations, according to federal inspection records.

Drivers for Adonai & Associates were taken off the road 33 percent of the time following federal safety accidents while the national average amount of drivers pulled of the road following such accidents is 6.8 percent.

However, the April 1 crash that involved an Adonai-contracted driver was the first incident where the company’s drivers were involved in a collision. Arthur Araugo, owner of Adonai, said his company is relatively new — federal records show only eight vehicle inspections and nine driver inspections in the past two years. “I haven’t had that many inspections, so it kind of made my scores look worse than they are,” said Araugo.

The specific crash involved brake failure on a car-transport truck carrying three vehicles. The truck collided with a Ford Escort and pushed it about 200 yards down the roadway. Both passengers in the Ford were killed. The big-rig also smashed through the front of a building. No one inside the building was hurt.
