Texas women killed in truck wreck

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Two Texas women were killed in Colorado as their Jeep Liberty SUV was hit from behind by a semi-truck driver.

The Associated Press reports that the two women were travelling at about 15 mph down eastern Colorado’s I-70 because of icy conditions on the highway, while the driver of a big rig was driving his truck at about 55 mph. Both of the women in the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical crews.

After the semi-truck driver collided with the SUV, it crashed into a pickup truck and caused the pickup to collide with a Chevrolet Surburban SUV. No serious injuries were reported from the drivers or passengers of the other motor vehicles involved in the truck wreck.

The driver of the semi-truck was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide and other charges.

A two-car collision in La Marque, Texas  last month, which killed one 17-year-old girl and injured three other young women, has resulted in two civil lawsuits.

The mother of the girl who was killed and the grandmother of one of the injured girls have filed separate lawsuits against the driver of the car that caused the accident, alleging he was  drunk when the accident occurred.

According to the original petition, the defendant’s conduct “… involved an extreme degree of risk, considering the probability and magnitude of the potential harm to others, and the defendant was actually, subjectively aware of the risk involved, but nevertheless proceeded with conscious indifference to the rights, safety, and welfare of others.”

The defendant has also been charged with one criminal count of intoxicated manslaughter and three counts of intoxicated assault with a motor vehicle.
