New Florida Bill Proposes Ban on Teen Cell Phone Use While Driving

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

A new bill that is pending in the Florida State Legislature will ban the use of cell phones while driving among minors.

The purpose of the bill is to attempt to reduce the amount of car wrecks in Florida. Many studies have proven that the use of cell phones while driving is as dangerous as driving while under the influence of alcohol. They have also shown that car wrecks can result from talking on both hand-held and hands-free devices.

The bill is set to take effect on October 1, 2008.

The bill prohibits the use of any wireless communications device while driving by anyone under the age of 18. Any violations can result in a traffic ticket.

The bill does not extend to adults.

Car wreck attorneys are working on cases that wherein serious injury occurred during a car wreck caused by driver distraction due to cell phones.

Friday, April 11th, 2008

On April 9th, Toyota and General Motors recalled over 660,000 cars in order to repair a defect in the side window hardware. The recall applies to 2003-2004 models with power windows.About 540,000 Toyota Matrixes and Corollas as well as about 123,000 Pontiac Vibes were recalled. The recalled vehicles can be taken to a Toyota or General Motors dealer. The dealer will replace the bolts that hold both the driver and passenger side windows in place.

The bolts are known to loosen and detach.

In February, The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that the defect causes the windows to become inoperable and sometimes shatter. This can lead to injuries and car wrecks.

Over 500 complaints have been received by both the auto manufacturers and the NHTSA. About 36 of the complaints claimed that injuries resulted from the defect and there has been at least one accident. The NHTSA stated that the defect can be attributed to about 12,000 warrantee claims as well.

There are car wreck attorneys currently working on cases in which serious injury has resulted due to car wrecks caused by auto defects.

Mercedes Benz Recalls Thousands of Sedans

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Over three thousand Mercedes Benz, 2008 S Class luxury sedans are being recalled due to a defective transistor.

The malfunction in question is related to the signal acquisition and the actuation module. If the defective transistor malfunctions, the driver may loose control of vehicle functions, which can result in a car wreck.

The transistors are being recalled due to manufacturer negligence. Before installation, they were not properly stored and were exposed to excess humidity. When the excess moisture that is built up, because of the humidity exposure, combines with thermal stress, damage can occur to the transistors.

Mercedes Benz will begin the recall in May. All recalled vehicles can be inspected at a Mercedes Benz dealership, where they will replace the transistor for free.

Currently, car wreck attorneys are working on cases in which serious or fatal injury has occurred in car wrecks due to auto defects.
