Evenflo Discovery Infant Safety Seats Recalled

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Evenflo is voluntarily recalling over 1,00,000 Discovery child safety seats. The product consists of a carrier that locks into a base, which is strapped into the back seat of a vehicle with a seat belt. Studies show that the carrier may separate from the base in a side-impact collision.

The Evenflo recall effects all Evenflo Discovery seats manufactured from April 2005 to January 29, 2008. The model numbers of the seats recalled are:

  • 390
  • 391
  • 534
  • 552

Those who own Evenflo Discovery seats that are affected by the recall, can call the company to obtain a free fastening system that the company claims will fix the problem.

The Evenflo Discovery safety seat recall is the first to involve tests of side-impact collisions. Standards for side-impact collisions have not been established by the Federal government. Currently, only standards for front-end collisions are required to be met.

A Florida family has filed a lawsuit against Evenflo stating that the defect applies to child safety seats manufactured as far back as 2000. The daughter of the Florida family was injured during a side-impact collision while restrained in an Evenflo Discovery child safety seat.

CAR SEAT RECALL FROM EVENFLO

Monday, February 25th, 2008

There has been a recall on children’s car seats from car seat manufacturer Evenflo. The recall applies to Evenflo Discover car seat models 390, 391, and 552 after a side-impact crash test showed the portable carrier becoming detached from its base, potentially exposing helpless infants to serious injury or death. Evenflo claims this recall is purely a precaution, especially since side impact crash tests are currently not required for car seats since no standards have been set. Though this recall only applies to 2005 year models and later, Evenflo is currently facing a handful of lawsuits claiming this defect has existed as early as 2002. The car seat defect can be neutralized by installing a dual hook on the seat. If you have a Discover model 390, 391, or 552 and have not yet ordered a dual hook, you can contact Evenflo at 800-356-2229 or NHTSA at 888-327-4236.

Multiple Portions of Interstate 80 Shut Down Due to Automobile Accidents

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

February storms have impacted traffic in Western Pennsylvania. Multiple car accidents in Clarion County and Clearfield County closed I-80 in four different places.

One person was killed in Pennsylvania in an accident involving three semi-trucks in Clarion County. Reports from the incident indicate that the driver of a tractor-trailer swerved over the center median and entered oncoming traffic, where he struck two other tractor-trailers.

Intense road conditions due to weather have been a factor in other accidents occurring all along I-80. Driving on icy roads in bad weather requires extra safety efforts to prevent accidents that result in injury, or fatality.

Remember:

  • Drive at a slow speed
  • Avoid sudden changes in direction
  • Turn on the vehicle lights
  • Maintain visibility by keeping windows clear
  • Be alert

Driver negligence is a major cause of car wrecks resulting in serious injury and death. Failing to drive safely on icy roads and in bad weather can be determined as negligence.
